“Not only am I one of the few women in my major, but I am the only black woman. Many of my authority figures are racist. I’ve had teaching assistants take one look at my skin and ask me which part of Africa I am from. When I complain, they say they are just trying to get to know me and my heritage better. But is it not racist to ask every black person you encounter which part of Africa they are from?
Celebration of Diversity made me feel like I finally had a space to learn and grow without having to worry about the color of my skin every minute. But my first few weeks of college confused me. This wasn’t the representation that was presented at the diversity weekend.”
