I was talking with a professor and mentioned where my family was from (not specifying for anonymity). That professor then mentioned that they knew a colleague doing research on that country. I happened to know that the colleague they mentioned was actually doing research on a totally different country over 2000 miles away. The professor I was speaking with had a PhD in that area of study. It could have been an honest mistake, but it still made me feel unrecognized, othered, and highlighted the painful lack of acknowledgement of people like me on campus.
