    In the first week of school, as student who I had recently met and a few friends were walking down the sidewalk at night. I expressed discomfort with traveling down a a backstreet at night. One of the girls (an Asian woman) piped up: "You're black, whoever is out there won't see you in the dark anyways." Everybody laughed.
